Ivan Mironov, who has been on the wanted list on charges of involvement in the assassination attempt against Anatoly Chubais, has been detained here
Ivan Mironov, who has been on the wanted list on charges of involvement in the assassination attempt against Anatoly Chubais, the chief of RAO UESR, has been detained here, defence lawyer Viktor Vyskreptov told Itar-Tass on Tuesday. However, as of now, there has been no official confirmation of that from the Office of Prosecutor General. "Ivan Mironov was detained at 16:00, Moscow time, on Monday, December 11, when he was leaving his home. At present, he is kept in a pre-trial detention center on Petrovka Street. He has been officially charged in connection with the case concerning the attack on Chubais," the defence lawyer said. Vyskreptov pointed out that the prosecutor's office would decide within three days on whether Mironov should be taken into custody. During questioning, Mironov pleaded not guilty and stated his having nothing to do with the crime being imputed to him. Mironov, a 25-year student of the History Department of one of Moscow-based institutions of higher learning, has been on the all-Russia wanted list since 2005 on suspicion of being involved in the attack on Chubais. Besides, the defence lawyer said, members of personnel of law enforcement agencies also detained Ivan Mironov's father, Boris Mironov, on Monday. "Investigators suspect Boris Mironov of incitement to inter-ethnic discord. The question of bringing official charges against him on that count is under consideration," Vyskreptov said. Information on the detention of Boris Mironov has not been officially confirmed so far by law enforcement agencies either. The motorcade of Anatoly Chubais, the chief of the RAO Unified Energy Systems of Russia, was fired upon in the morning of March 17, 2005. After the cars of Chubais and bodyguards left the grounds of the summer-cottage community Zhavoronki (skylarks) in Odintsovo District of Moscow Region, a powerful explosion occurred at the roadside. Following that, two unidentified gunners opened fire on the bodyguards who jumped out of the car. No one was hurt. The attackers fled. Two days later, the first suspect, Colonel (Ret.) Vladimir Kvachkov, was detained in Moscow. He is accused under the provisions of three articles of the Criminal Code -- an attempt at murder, an illegal keeping of firearms and explosives, and terrorism. Members of personnel of law enforcement agencies, former paratroopers Alexander Naidyonov and Robert Yashin, were also detained on suspicion of involvement in the assassination attempt. The accused plead not guilty.
