Lyubov Sliska said that the UN should play the main role in resolving the crisis in the Middle East
Addressing a joint session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly committees and a State Duma delegation in Moscow, First Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Lyubov Sliska said that the UN should play the main role in resolving the crisis in the Middle East. Ms. Sliska stressed that the situation in Afghanistan would be a successfully resolved if the UN played a central and coordinating role and NATO played an auxiliary role. Otherwise, Afghanistan's neighbors and the Muslim world would give a hostile reception to the entire operation, Ms. Sliska said. She expressed Russia's concern over NATO's policy in Afghanistan, especially because the Taliban movement and Al Qaeda have been seldom mentioned recently. Ms. Sliska noted that it was being frequently suggested recently that the main danger for the stabilization process in Afghanistan stemmed from NATO leadership. However, NATO played the main role in removing the Taliban regime. She also stressed that Russia welcomed the new government in Afghanistan, the strengthening of the government's influence in the country and that presidential and parliamentary elections were scheduled for September. Speaking about the Iraq, Ms. Sliska said that the Russian approach to normalizing the situation in the country remained unchanged. "We consistently come out for the restoration of sovereignty and preservation of territorial integrity of the country," she added. She also reported that Russia favored a political process, based on the consensus of all of the leading political forces in the country, aimed at creating new state administrative structures. Ms. Sliska stressed that handing over power to the new government was only the first step in the difficult process of the development of the country. She recalled that Russia wanted to hold an international conference on Iraq that included all of the country's political forces, including the opposition, as well as members of the UN Security Council.
