The maximum temperature Friday of 5°C (41°F) in Moscow was a record high for December 15, the capital's weather bureau said Friday. Following near-record low temperatures during last winter's cold snap, which saw the mercury plummet to -31°C (-23.8°F) on January 19, one degree above the all-time low in Moscow, European Russia has seen record warm temperatures this month. The December 15 maximum "is a new record for this day, which was which was previously registered at 4.4°C (40°F) in 1972," he said. The new high is the fifth record for December dates set during this month, he said. Weather forecasters are expecting today's temperatures to rise further later in the day, to set a new December 15 record - thermometers in the capital may climb to 7-9°C (45-48°F).
