German Chancellor Angela Merkel will arrive in Russia on an official visit January 21
German Chancellor Angela Merkel will arrive in Russia on an official visit January 21, the Kremlin press office said Tuesday. "The program of her visit includes top-level Russian-German talks," the Kremlin said. Merkel earlier said that at talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin later in the month she would discuss the current interruption in Russian oil supplies via Belarus to Germany and other European countries. Germany, along with several other EU members, have been affected by Russia's halting of crude supplies through the Druzhba pipeline, over a bitter energy price and tariff dispute with Belarus, which Moscow accuses of siphoning off Europe-bound crude. At a news conference in Berlin earlier Tuesday, Merkel and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso voiced their concerns over the disruption, which has also affected Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and highlighted the need to diversify energy sources.
