Ariel Sharon gave a telephone call to Russian President Vladimir Putin
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon gave a telephone call to Russian President Vladimir Putin Monday, the Kremlin press service reports. Sharon shared with Putin his assessment of the current situation in the Middle East and of prospects for his Disengagement Plan, envisaging the withdrawal of Israeli settlements from Gaza and the West Bank, Kremlin spokespeople say. Putin, who had welcomed Sharon's plan as a positive move at a Quartet session in New York and at a subsequent G8 summit in Georgia, reiterated his positive appraisal in today's telephone conversation, but underlined the importance of implementing this initiative as part of the Road Map plan. According to the Kremlin press service, Putin and Sharon also discussed some of the issues relating to economic cooperation between their two countries .
