Eighteen repeated earthquakes have been registered in the Kuril Islands chain over the past 24 hours
Eighteen repeated earthquakes have been registered in the Kuril Islands chain over the past 24 hours. On Sunday, 28 underground tremors were reported. The Sakhalin region, which is a part of the Kurile Islands, felt no tremors which posed no tsunami threat. Over the two-month seismic activity 400 repeated earthquakes hit the Sumashir Island. Underground tremors have been detected near the Kurile Islands chain since November 15, 2006, when a 7.9-magnitude quake was registered there. On January 13, an 8.0-magnitude quake jolted the region. At present, tremors under the Pacific Ocean bottom are slowing down and their intensity reducing.
