The defense of Alexei Frenkel has appealed against the arrest of his client
The defense of Alexei Frenkel, the suspected mastermind behind the murder of First Deputy Chairman of Central Bank Andrei Kozlov, has appealed against the arrest of his client. "We lodged a petition at the Moscow City Court on Tuesday against the decision by the city's Basmanny Court to choose arrest as the measure of restraint for Frenkel," lawyer Igor Trunov said. "We object to this decision, and believe that it is unsubstantiated; the prosecutor offered no proofs that Frenkel might go into hiding which would necessitate his arrest," Trunov said. Frenkel, 35, co-founded a number of financial and loan institutions, including the VIP-Bank and the Sodbiznesbank. Investigators believe that as a result of Kozlov's activities to revoke the licenses of the banks violating the money-laundering law, "the suspect was suffering multi-billion losses." Frenkel was detained overnight to January 11. Kozlov was gunned down on the premises of the Spartak sport complex in Moscow on September 13, 2006. His driver was also killed. The Russian Prosecutor General's Office said it will bring charges against Frenkel later this week. Trunov confirmed it on Monday, saying "We received a notice saying the investigation department of the Prosecutor General's Office will bring charges against Frenkel on January 17."
