The Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works is marking the 75th anniversary of the start-up of the enterprise
The Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (also known for its Russian acronym MMK) is marking the 75th anniversary of the start-up of the enterprise. The initial amount of pig iron was produced at the MMK's first blast furnace near Mount Magnitnaya (magnetic) on February 1, 1932. President Vladimir Putin congratulated the personnel of the MMK on the 75th jubilee of the enterprise. "I want to extend congratulations, first and foremost, to the workers and engineering personnel (of the MMK)," Putin said on January 30 during a meeting with MMK Director Viktor Rashnikov. The President positively assessed the MMK plans, including those aimed at developing the production of metal for the needs of the automobile industry. Rashnikov said, for his part, that MMK output had doubled over the past ten years. Tax payments had grown from 1,400 million to 14,000 million roubles while expenditure on nature conservation had gone up as well. "Atmospheric emissions did not grow as production increased," Rashnikov pointed out. The MMK Director said the average monthly pay at the MMK is 19,800 roubles. When speaking of development plans, Rashnikov said a mill-5, 000 is already under construction at the MMK for the production of pipes that are necessary for the implementation of such large-scale projects as the North European gas pipeline, the development of the Shtokman gasfield, and the construction of branches of gas pipelines running to China.
