The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office explained on Friday the essence of new charges that have been brought against the ex-chiefs of YUKOS and MENATEP
The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office explained on Friday the essence of new charges that have been brought against the ex-chiefs of YUKOS and MENATEP, Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev. According to investigators, “Khodorkovsky and Lebedev together with other participants in an organised group by fraud and compilation of fictitious documents stole shares of daughter organisations of the Eastern Oil Company, inflicting major damage on the state,” the Prosecutor General’ s Office said. “With the aim of hiding the theft and imparting legality to obtaining the shares, they were re-registered to a number of foreign offshore companies. Thus, property obtained in a designedly illegal way – state-owned securities - was legalised,” it said. “In the period 1998-2003, Khodorkovsky and Lebedev committed the theft of oil of the companies Samaraneftegaz, Yuganskneftegaz and Tomskneft in the amount of over 850 billion roubles. The criminal group in a fraudulent way got hold of it under the guise of so-called borehole liquid and then resold it to companies at a price approximately three-four times above cost through controllable firms. These companies were registered both in Russia and abroad specially for the realisation of the scheme of selling stolen oil and leaving a part of proceeds abroad.” “As a result of it, 450 billion roubles and 7.5 billion US dollars was legalised in 1998-2004,” the Prosecutor-General’s Office said.
