President Vladimir Putin has called on Palestinian National Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas to abide by agreements and return the captured Israeli soldier
Putin said he hopes that the agreements will bring results and promote the creation of an effective Palestinian government. “The achievement of these goals will create conditions for the lift of the blockade and further steps towards comprehensive settlement of the relations with Israel,” he said. “However, that would require the fulfillment of the agreements on Palestinian lands and the creation of conditions for further steps in settling relations with Israel. The return of the captured Israeli soldier would be important in this respect,” he said. Russia will keep working for the Mideast settlement, Putin said. “It is actively working at the international mediating quartet. We will continue to do the same with due account of our special relations with Arab countries and Palestinians,” he said. “No matter what we were discussing [during the Mideast trip], we inevitably started and ended our negotiations with the Palestinian problem,” he said. Putin welcomed the agreements reached with the mediation of the Saudi king. Abbas said that the Palestinian government will soon be dismissed and the premier will form a new government in compliance with the accords. “We will ensure the resignation of this government within two or three days and instruct the premier to form a new government on the agreed principles if nothing unexpected happens,” he said. “This is a very important step, as it brings the entire process onto the right track,” Abbas said in comments on the Mecca agreements. “We attribute large significance to the agreement and highly respect the efforts of the king of Saudi Arabia,” he said.
