A car bomb explosion killed 18 people on Wednesday in the city of Zahedan (Sistan and Baluchistan Province, in the south-eastern part of Iran, close to the border with Pakistan and Afghanistan), the IRNA news agency reports. According to General Kassam Rezai, commander of the Rosul Akram military base of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), “the explosion killed 18 residents of Zahedan.” According to the recent reports, the bus in which they were going belonged to IRGC, which is the elite of the Iranian armed forces. Witnesses of the incident reported that unidentified armed criminals had placed the car bomb on the route of the base that carried staff members of the local military base. When the bus approached the car bomb, two men on motorcycles came close to it, opened fire at it and made it stop. After that the car bomb was set off with the help of a remote-control device. Some sources report that two participants in the attack have been arrested already. The incident is being investigated. The main routes, used by criminals for the transportation of narcotics from Afghanistan and Pakistan to Europe, go by the territory of the Sistan and Baluchistan Province. The Iranian troops deployed there wage a continuous war against drug traffickers. The area is inhabited by Sunnis, Shiites, Baluchis as well as people of other religious confessions and nationalities.
