Russia will support the formation of a Palestinian national unity government and negotiations with Israel
Russia will support the formation of a Palestinian national unity government and negotiations with Israel, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday. “Our common task is to give comprehensive support to the formation of this government,” he said. “This is primarily important for negotiations with Israel, as the Mecca agreements pledged Hamas respect for decisions of the international community and the League of Arab States (LAS), including the LAS initiative of lasting peace with Israel through normalized relations with all Arab states in exchange for the release of occupied lands.” “Moscow hopes that the tripartite meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will help to use the positive potential created by the Hamas-Fateh agreement,” Lavrov said. “Russia will insist on the recognition of the agreement between the main Palestinian groups at the quartet meeting in Berlin,” he said.
