Russian President Vladimir Putin and APEC summit in Chile
Argentina expects Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet with MERCOSUR leaders after the APEC summit in Chile in November, Russian Foreign Ministry Sergei Lavrov said following the talks with Argentine Minister for Foreign Relations, International Trade and Worship Rafael Antonio Bielsa. "We promised to think over the Argentine proposals and inform President Putin about them," Mr. Lavrov said. [The MERCOSUR, or South American common, unites Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay]. Russia is interested in the development of relations with the MERCOSUR. In 2003 former Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov met with his MERCOSUR counterparts. The sides issued a joint statement on political dialogue and cooperation to solve a number of important problems. Among them are multilateral cooperation on international security, including new challenges and threats, the fight against international terrorism, drug trafficking and organized crime and interaction in economic, financial, investment, technological and scientific-technical spheres. After the negotiations Sergei Lavrov and Rafael Antonio Bielsa signed a joint statement on the development of bilateral cooperation. "The talks were held after the business forum, which provides good prospects for trade and economic cooperation," the Russian Foreign Minister stressed. The Russian and Argentine governments also signed a military-technical agreement.
