The rational use of the Baikal Lake resources is among the major priorities in the Siberian Federal District
The rational use of the Baikal Lake resources is among the major priorities in the Siberian Federal District, Russian presidential envoy in the Siberian Federal District Anatoly Kvashnin said at a meeting with the heads of Siberian regions and republics in Ulan-Ude on Wednesday. According to him, this concerns not only the recreational potential of the Baikal Lake, which can be used after the creation of special tourist zones for development of international tourism. “We should also assess the unique lake as a resource of future development of our country in view of the fresh water deficit, from which people on the Earth are suffering in the twenty-first century,” Kvashnin emphasized. The water is gradually becoming not less profitable article of export than oil, which can be offered for trade with countries in the Asia-Pacific region and on the world market, he believes. Another general Siberian priority will become the creation in eastern Russia of “large industrial regions, which specialize in the production of raw materials with its obligatory advanced processing,” the presidential envoy pointed out. In particular, it is polymetal deposits in East Siberia and the Baikal region, such as “zinc, molybdenum, copper and other metals are also in demand on the markets in the Asia-Pacific region.” Kvashnin met with the chief executives of the Irkutsk, Chita regions, the Republic of Buryatia and the Agin Buryat autonomous area. They discussed the issues, which will be considered at a meeting on economic and social development of the Far East and the Baikal region that Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov will chair in Vladivostok on Thursday. The Russian premier heads the State Commission for Far East Development.
