The popular daily Izvestia is celebrating the 90th jubilee on Tuesday
The popular daily Izvestia is celebrating the 90th jubilee on Tuesday. The newspaper's first issue was released exactly 90 years ago. Izvestia dates back to the February 1917 revolution known as an important period in the history of Russian journalism. Special celebrations will be held in St. Petersburg on the occasion. An exhibition titled "Izvestia's look at the 20th century", a panorama of events witnessed by the newspaper photographers of different generations, will be opened at the Russian Ethnography Museum. “No special celebrations are expected Tuesday,” Editor-in-Chief Vladimir Mamontov told Tass. A small group of the newspaper staff will travel to St. Petersburg to attend an exhibition of photographs devoted to the anniversary, Mamontov said. A memorial plaque will be unveiled on the building of a print shop in St. Petersburg that released the first issue of the Izvestia newspaper that had a longer name then. "We are going to have a usual work schedule Tuesday and Tuesday's issue of the newspaper will be usual as well. Only the editorial titled "Ninety Years Lived as One Day" is devoted to the jubilee date," Mamontov said. The first issue of the Izvestia daily released on March 13 ninety years ago was distributed free of charge in St. Petersburg and other big Russian cities. The Izvestia had been published in St. Petersburg until March 1918. Afterwards, the newspaper headquarters moved to Moscow, following the Bolshevik government headed by Vladimir Lenin. Alexei Adzhubei, son-in law of former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev and no less famous Nikolai Bukharin, were editors-in-chief of the popular newspaper. On November 17, 2000 the newspaper was honored with the status of the Newspaper of the Century. The Izvestia jubilee celebrations will continue throughout the whole month, Mamontov said. A gala ceremony will be held at the President Hotel on March 26. A gala concert in the Grand Kremlin Palace will crown the celebrations on April 30, Mamontov said. “The newspaper aspires to be a live edition, addressed above all to clever and intelligent readers. Out newspaper is influential enough, being above all a truly people's newspaper,” Mamontov said.
