Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived for a working visit in Italy
Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived for a working visit in Italy. The plane of the Russian head of state touched down at Pratica di Mare airbase near Rome. The wife of the Russian leader, Lyudmila Putin, arrived in Italy together with the Russian president at the personal invitation of the wife of the Italian prime minister, Flavia Franzoni Prodi. The meeting with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano in the Quirinale Palace will be the first item on the program of the Russian president’s visit. “This will be the first contact of the presidents of the two countries since Napolitano’s being elected president in May 2006,” the Russian president’s aide, Sergei Prikhodko, said. On the same day Putin will make a brief visit to the Vatican and will have a conversation with Pope Benedict XVI. Upon the end of that conversation the Russian president will meet with Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi. The talks between the president and the premier beginning on Tuesday will be continued on Wednesday in the city of Bari, the administrative centre of Apulia region 500 kilometres southeast of Rome, where the Russian-Italian interstate consultations will be held.
