Chinese leader Hu Jintao will pay an official visit to Russia March 26-28
Chinese leader Hu Jintao will pay an official visit to Russia March 26-28, the Kremlin press service said Monday. The Kremlin said Jintao would meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the two leaders would also participate in a ceremony to open Year of China in Russia and a Chinese exhibition. Beijing is currently hosting the sixth round of talks to persuade North Korea to abandon nuclear research. It opened Monday with the United States reaffirming its commitment to lift financial sanctions from the Communist state, raising hopes for further denuclearization moves. Russia and China, both permanent veto-wielding UN Security Council members, are also involved in the ongoing dispute over Iran's nuclear ambitions, advocating more moderate means of dissuading the Islamic Republic from uranium enrichment activities. In the energy sphere, the giant Asian nation is interested in a 4,700-kilometer (2,920-mile) Eastern Siberia-Pacific Ocean oil pipeline Russia is building to pump up to 1.6 million barrels per day of crude from Siberia to Russia's Far East, to then be sent on to China and other Asia-Pacific states. Moscow has also said it plans to diversify Russian exports to China by adding high-tech equipment to its traditional export commodities, oil and gas, timber, pulp and paper, and military equipment. Chinese exports to Russia traditionally include inexpensive clothes, consumer electronics, and manufacturing equipment. But the share of high-tech products has increased dramatically in the last two years - to 24% of the total, according to Chinese media.
