Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov to closely look into the reasons behind the methane explosion at a mine in the Kemerovo region
Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov to closely look into the reasons behind the methane explosion at a mine in the Kemerovo region, the fire at a home for elderly people in the Krasnodar region and the crash of a Tu-134 plane in Samara. “Mikhail Yefimovich, everything must be done to investigate the reasons at the highest level, reveal the causes of the accidents and draw necessary conclusions,” the Russian president said at a session of the commission for military cooperation with foreign states on Tuesday. The participants in the meeting observed a minute of silence in memory of the dead. “I offer to observe a minute of silence in their memory,” the president said before the session began. Six people were killed and 28 more were hospitalised when a Tu-134 airliner attempting to land in Samara on March 17 came down short of the runway, scrapped along the landing strip and overturned. There were 53 people on board, including 19 women and four children. Two days later, on March 19, a methane explosion at the Ulyanovskaya mine in the Kemerovo region killed at least 106 people. This has become the worst accident at a mine in the region over the past ten years. The fire at a home for elderly people in the settlement of Kamyshevatskaya, Krasnodar region, overnight to Tuesday has claimed the lives of 63 people.
