Mikhail Fradkov signed a decree setting up a committee for “aid to injured miners and families of deceased miners as a result of a crash at the Ulyanovskaya mine of the unified coalmining company Yuzhkuzbassugol"
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov signed a decree setting up a committee for “aid to injured miners and families of deceased miners as a result of a crash at the Ulyanovskaya mine of the unified coalmining company Yuzhkuzbassugol (Kemerovo region).” Russian Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu headed the committee, governor of the Kemerovo region Aman Tuleyev is appointed as Shoigu’s deputy, the governmental press service told Itar-Tass on Thursday. The committee included officials of the Ministry of Industry and Energy, Finance Ministry, Ministry of Health and Social Development and several other ministries and agencies. The major version of the crash at the Ulyanovskaya mine is a sudden emission and blast of methane, governor of the Kemerovo region Aman Tuleyev pointed out. He told the news show Vesti that “it is a blast of methane, which amassed in the medium part of the mine.” “There is a version that a mistake was made in the design of the mine, but it is not proved yet,” he added. According to him, “The first version remains the major one, but no final conclusions were drawn.” “We do not spur up (investigation) anyway. We have 100 mines and shafts, but we need a proved reason in order not to allow for it at other mines,” Tuleyev remarked. The methane blast went off at the mine on Monday morning. As many as 203 miners were staying in the shafts, 93 miners were saved. Meanwhile, 108 miners died, 83 of them have been identified by now. About 20 top managers of the coalmining company are among those killed. The funerals of 60 miners from the Ulyanovskaya mine were held in Novokuznetsk and Osinniki on Thursday. At present, rescuers keep looking for two lost miners. Tuleyev, who heads the operational headquarters, earlier stated that the rescue operation is being held in very difficult conditions. In one shaft the blast triggered rock falls, and another shaft is flooded. It may take two days to pump the water out of the flooded shaft.
