The damage from Russia’s coal mining accidents exceeded 320 million roubles in 2006
The damage from Russia’s coal mining accidents exceeded 320 million roubles in 2006, Federal Environmental, Engineering and Nuclear Supervision Agency (Rostekhnadzor) said in a statement on Thursday. In 2006, occupational safety changed for the better in mining enterprises. Twenty-six mining accidents were registered last year as against 27 in 2005. Forty-three people were injured in them, including 18 fatalities as against 74 injured, including 45 fatalities, in 2005. Fatal occupational injuries totalled 68 in 2006 as against 107 in 2005. Thus, the number of fatal traumas reduced by 36.5 percent and accidents – by 14.6 percent, the Prime-Tass economic news agency said. Rostekhnadzor says the main reasons for occupational injuries are wrong mine management, violations of technologic works and design projects and low awareness of miners about occupation safety. The reasons for mine accidents that cause blasts, methane ignitions are ventilation violations and high gas content in mines.
