Exercises of the Black Sea naval task group Blackseafor open on Monday. The Russian Black Sea Fleet’s public relations service told ITAR-TASS that the landing ship Tsezar Kunikov left Sevastopol for Novorossiisk for taking on the board an international ship-based staff. Rear Admiral Vitaly Mikhailov and Captain Mikhail Sukhval will make operative and tactical supervision of the deployment of forces planned on April 1-29. Ships involved in the exercises will make calls at the ports of Constanza (Romania,) Burgas (Bulgaria) and Istanbul (Turkey). Crew of the international formation will carry out joint drills of tactical maneuvering, of surface ship fight, air defense and communications. Military sailors will practice the rescue of a foundering ship, inspections of ships and underway replenishment. Special attention will be paid to drilling antiterrorist operations. Apart from the Tsezar Kunikov, which is the flagship of the formation, the corvette Bodry of the Bulgarian Navy, the frigate Sebastian (Romania), the Kemalreis (Turkey) and the Slavutich (Ukraine) will take part in the exercises. Bulgaria, Georgia, Russia, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine signed an agreement on the establishment of the Blackseafor naval task group in Istanbul in April 2001. Command of the group is taken over by member states for one year on a rotational basis in an alphabetic order. The 30-day exercises Blackseafor are conducted two times a year.
