Russian first vice-premier Sergei Ivanov, planning to visit the islands of Iturup and Kunashir on Thursday, will examine problems of the South Kuriles. He will visit on the islands the Burevesnik and Mendeleyevo airports, the Yasny fish-processing factory in the village of Reidovo and the Kurilsk wharf. Transport links with Sakhalin are especially urgent for the Kuriles. The Mendeleyevo airport in Kunashir stood idle for several months in 2006 over destruction of concrete slabs on the runway. There are no moorages in Iturup and Kunashir, to which passenger boats can sidle up. They lower anchors at roadsteads. Therefore, people have to transfer to ferries and to reach the coast this way. Dry cargo ships and other sea-going transports cannot approach Iturup and Kunashir either: all cargo operations are made on roadsteads. Ivanov already visited the Kuriles when he was the defence minister and knows many problems of the islands. Last year, commenting on the state of the airports on Iturup and Kunashir, he said that “pilots, making flights to the South Kuriles, are worthy of the titles of Heroes of Russia, since the airports’ infrastructure had been made by Japanese for the take-offs by kamikazes. Governor of the Sakhalin Region Ivan Malakhov reckons that all transport projects on the Kuriles should be of dual use – both for military and for civilian structures. In this case, the Burevestnik and Mendeleyevo airports will receive additional navigation resources and maintenance of the runways in a good state. Malakhov intends to raise these questions again at his meeting with Ivanov on the Kurile Islands.
