The action “For worthy pension” passed on Tuesday in some Russian regions
The action “For worthy pension” passed on Tuesday in some Russian regions. People of venerable age insist that pension payments should be brought to the level of the living wage and amounted to no less than 40 percent of their former wages. There was no information on any incidents which would need police interference. Around 500 people gathered for a rally in Moscow. Participants in the rally, organized by the Russian Federation of Independent Trade Unions, called on the government to provide funds in the federal budget for an increase of the minimum size of labour remuneration to the living wage by December 1, 2008 and to give subjects of the Russian Federation the right to set regional standards of the minimum size of labour remuneration. The problem of correlation between the level of pensions and the living wage is nation-wide. According to data of the Pension Fund branch for the Kamchatka Region, the size of the average labour pension stands at 4,924 roubles as of April 1, while the living wage there is equal to 6,688 roubles per month. In Sakhalin, this correlation is 4,500 roubles and 5,974, respectively; in the Buryatia Republic – 2,900 and 3,165 roubles. The Samara Region is one of a few exceptions: the average size of pensions there is 3,266 roubles, and the living wage – 3,009. Pensioners also staged their actions in the Voronezh, Kursk, Oryol and Samara regions as well as in the Stavropol, Khabarovsk and Altai territories. Some regions responded quickly, at least verbally, to the demands of pensioners, while others kept mum. For instance not a single local minister or a member of the legislative assembly in the Altai Republic came to a rally and tried to reply somehow to demands of rally participants.
