The Russo-Ukrainian relations have been developing, rather than being at a standstill
The Russo-Ukrainian relations have been developing, rather than being at a standstill, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a meeting with the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Arseny Yatsenyuk on Monday. Pragmatism and orientation to good relations of partnership envisaged in the 1997 Treaty are a key to successful cooperation, Lavrov stressed. "The relations between the two countries need scrupulous attention," Lavrov stressed. An intensive political dialogue has been developing, the preparations for a second meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Viktor Yushchenko are being made, which will be preceded by talks between committees and sub-committees, the Russian minister said. He expressed the hope that a detailed discussion would be held on all the aspects of the relations. Moscow will do everything possible to help the newly appointed head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry work on the Russo-Ukrainian front, Lavrov stressed. For his part, Arseny Yatsenyuk stated dynamic development of the Russo-Ukrainian relations. This year, the tenth anniversary of the fundamental treaty between the two countries will be observed, Yatsenyuk said. It would be interesting to discuss prospects for the realization of this document, he said. "We have been cooperating under the Putin-Yushchenko 2007 plan. This was one of the domineering subjects at my meeting with Secretary of the Russian Security Council Igor Ivanov," the Ukrainian foreign minister said.
