Twenty two militants have been killed, 82 detained and 99 willingly surrendered to police in Chechnya since January 1, Chechen Interior Minister Ruslan Alkhanov said at the ministry’ s session, which reviewed the results of policing operations in the first three months of the current year. Alkhanov said Chechen police and Russian Interior Ministry troops “managed to maintain the steady trend towards the stabilisation of the crime situation in the republic.” “Chechnya’s Interior Ministry keeps intensifying its efforts to combat terrorism and other crimes,” Alkhanov said. He said the number of registered heavy crimes, such as terror attacks, murders, kidnappings and others, had reduced by 21.3 percent against 202 crimes during the same period 2006. Alkhanov also said the fight against terrorism and extremism remained the ministry’s main goal.
