Gennady Zyuganov is sure that he has come out victorious in intraparty strife still prior to the Communists' congress on July 3
Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov is sure that he has come out victorious in intraparty strife still prior to the Communists' congress on July 3. "This line has triumphed. We have 18,000 primary organizations and they all have voted for this line," Zyuganov said in a RIA Novosti interview this Thursday when asked about the likeliness of his victory at a forthcoming congress. A group of members of the Communist Party's central committee still earlier appealed to Zyuganov to resign because of his political mistakes and collaboration with oligarchs. "My line has come on top because primary organizations in a party is like battalions in the army. They have voted for our line," noted Zyuganov. Meanwhile, the coordinating council of the People's Patriotic Forces of Russia (PPFR), including a number of Left-wing parties together with the Communist Party, declared this Thursday an early suspension of Gennady Zyuganov's chairmanship, says an official statement received by RIA Novosti. Gennady Semigin, the head of the PPFR executive committee, has been appointed acting chairman. Zyuganov's resignation is motivated in the statement by his "repeated attempts to split the movement and to paralyze its activity." Semigin who used to insist on Zyuganov's removal from the Communist Party leader post last spring was excluded from the party for dissent. His allies in the Communist party keep insisting on Zyuganov's resignation at a congress to take place on July 3. The document passed at the PPFR coordinating council's session this Thursday repeated the former accusations of Zyuganov's attempts to usurp power in the PPFR, to undermine the work of the people's patriotic movement and to slander against the PPFR leaders. On the other hand, the PPFR top that has overthrown Zyuganov declares its intention to build up cooperation with the Communist Party and even to conclude a special agreement. "Members of the Communist Party as individuals have every right to take part in the activities of the People's Patriotic Union of Russia at any level without any restrictions," says the statement. The PPFR has also stated its joining the movement Patriots of Russia, established last spring as a counterbalance to the Left-wing bloc under the direction of Zyuganov. Semigin said Thursday at a press conference that the Communist leader's expulsion from the main managerial body of the People's Patriotic Union of Russia he has been heading until today has no political implication. "This is a purely legal decision, not a political one, though we do have some claims in regard to Zyuganov," he said. The representatives of the Communist Party who have had a majority in the PPFR managerial body until recently are automatically expelled in compliance with the movement's changed charter now banning the membership of party executives in the Union leadership. "This applies to nine men in the coordinating council, including Zyuganov, who have quit automatically," said Semigin known for his antagonism with Zyuganov. All the changes in the PPFR charter are to be endorsed at the movement's congress to take place in the near future, he said. The news about Zyuganov's removal from the post has been met with surprise by the Communist Party. "The Communist Party has an overwhelming majority in the coordinating council. If a decision is taken without us, this is nothing but games of apparatchiks," said Ilya Ponomarev who heads the youth wing of the Communist Party. He and several other Communist Party members were barred from Semigin's press conference in the House of Journalists. Communist Party members consider the decision declared this Thursday to be invalid.
