The share of counterfeit products on the Russian market currently stands at 15-17 percent
The share of counterfeit products on the Russian market currently stands at 15-17 percent, the coordinator of the intellectual property committee of trademarks and brands producers (Rusbrand), Alexei Popovichev, told a news conference, devoted to the struggle against counterfeit products in 2006. Federal Customs Service officials also took part in the news conference. “Whereas in 1999 forgeries accounted for 60 percent of some product titles on the Russian market, now, according to our organization, the share of counterfeit items ranges 15 percent to 17 percent,” Popovichev said, adding that in general this parameter was down by a factor of four. According to the Russian customs, forgeries were most frequent on the markets of clothes and footwear, confectioneries and foods held second place, and perfumery, body care products, alcohol and tobacco, third. As for the abuse of copyrights of audio, video and software producers, as well as manufacturers of accessories and household appliances, it is rated fourth. The Rusbrand official said companies who take care of their clients and cooperate with the Federal Customs Service in the fight against counterfeit products manage to achieve some very good results, for instance, reduce the presence of forged brands to a tiny three percent. For his part, a representative of the Federal Customs Service, Vladimir Zubkov, said the FTS last year exposed 1,628 cases of counterfeit products being brought into Russia. In the previous year, 390 such cases were exposed. “These parameters indicate the genuine interest of the state to eliminate substandard forgeries from the market and to protect copyrights,” Zubkov said. The register of intellectual property items is an effective tool of customs control to protect the interests of copyright holders. The Federal Customs Service keeps such a record with the consent of copyright owners. “In the Russian customs register there are 850 registered trademarks – those of major companies that cause considerable influence on the struggle against the spread of counterfeit products,” Popovichev said. Experience shows that companies which maintain close cooperation with the FTS and agree to being included in the trademarks’ register are best protected from forgeries.
