More than 2,000 firearms were stolen from army depots in southern Russia last year
More than 2,000 firearms were stolen from army depots in southern Russia last year. A total of 3,600 weapons are listed as stolen in the region, deputy head of the Prosecutor General's Office department in the Southern Federal District Anatoly Arsentyev said on Wednesday. The situation with illegal weapons trafficking in the region remains difficult. More than 2,000 weapons thefts have been registered here since the beginning of this year. Armed forces remain the key supplier of weapons to the black market. "The theft of weapons from depots is impossible without corrupted officials," the deputy prosecutor emphasized. Two officials were held criminally responsible for corruption this year, Arsentyev added. In Dagestan, more than 100 people were killed and another 200 were injured in 16 attacks by terrorists who used stolen weapons last year, according to the official. Homemade weapons production, the digging of World War II weapons and the smuggling of weapons from ethnic conflict zones are other illegal channels of supplies, Last year, 23 criminal cases over weapons contraband were opened. "But this figure does not adequately reflect the real situation," Arsentyev stressed.
