Vladimir Putin offered OSC in Europe to discuss the problem of the deployment of U.S. missile defense capabilities in Europe
Russian President Vladimir Putin offered the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to discuss the problem of the deployment of U.S. missile defense capabilities in Europe. "Elements of the U.S. strategic armaments may appear in Europe for the first time, and these plans are not the problem of only Rusian-U.S. relations, they concern interests of all European states," Putin underlined in his state of the nation address to the Federal Assembly on Thursday. "This theme requires discussion at the OSCE, it is time to flesh out the work of this organization, and turn it to face problems that really worry peoples of Europe, instead of splitting hairs only in the post-Soviet territory," Putin said. The president also said "we support Kazakhstan's candidacy to chair the OSCE and are hoping that Kazakhstan’s chairmanship will give the necessary positive impulse to the organization's work." Russia is determined to play an active role in economic integration in the CIS space and in the entire Eurasian space, President Vladimir Putin said in his annual message to the Federal Assembly. He called for the further strengthening of integration processes in the EurAsEC and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, saying that “the economy is a symbol of security.” “Russia does not dictate development models to anyone. We merely safeguard our economic interests,” he said. Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated he would leave his post after his second presidential term in spring 2008. “Another president will read the next similar address,” Putin said in his state-of-nation address to the Federal Assembly on Thursday. Meanwhile, Putin stressed it is premature for him “to come out with a political will.” However, “it is necessary to think always about the future,” he added. Speaking on Russia’s future, the president noted that in any case country’s further development “should be based on fundamental moral values, which the Russian people acquired for its (Russia’s – Itar-Tass) millennium history.”
