The fire area has almost doubled in Russia over the past day, a source in the information department of the Russian Emergencies Ministry told Itar-Tass on Thursday. “If forest fires spread on over 22,000 hectares on Wednesday, it is 40,000 hectares on Thursday,” the source emphasized. As many as 192 spots of fire on an area totalling more than 41.1 thousand hectares were registered now. The forests are on fire in four Russian federal districts – Far Eastern, Siberian, Volga-Urals and Southern districts. Meanwhile, the most difficult situation is emerging in Siberia and the Far East. Twenty-one sweeping wildfires were registered in these federal districts,” the source pointed out. Most fires were reported in the Chita and Amur regions, as well as in the Russian Republic of Tuva, where the fires engulfed on about 14,000 hectares of the taiga. One big fire was also registered in Buryatia. More than 2,000 people are involved in the firefighting efforts, many special vehicles are used. Twelve airplanes and helicopters are extinguishing forest fires from the air. The Emergencies Ministry pledged that forest fires pose no threat to settlements, oil and gas pipelines, potentially dangerous facilities and other economic entities.
