Russian President Vladimir Putin met members of the International Olympic Committee in the Kremlin on Monday
Russian President Vladimir Putin met members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in the Kremlin on Monday. This February, Putin already met representatives of the IOC in Sochi, where they took a look at the preparations of the Russian resort city for hosting Winter Olympic Games in 2014. Sochi is contesting with Austria’s Salzburg and South Korea’s Pyeongchang in a bid to be the venue of the Olympics. A decision on a place of the 2014 Winter Games will be made at the 119th session of IOC in Guatemala on July 4. Putin met the president of the Association of International Winter Olympic Sports Federation, Rene Fasel; the president of the European Olympic Committee, Patrick Hickey; and the president of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, Lassana Palenfo. The chief of the Russian Federal Agency for Physical Culture and Sport, Vyacheslav Fetisov; the president of the Russian Olympic Committee, Leonid Tyagachev; and the president of the company Interros, Vladimir Potanin, attended the meeting. Hickey expressed regret that not all in the world realize that Russia lost in the Second World War more people than the rest of the whole world. “Thank you for your recalling this. This is really so,” Putin told Hickey. “But we pay a tribute to all victims of Nazism, first of all in the countries that resisted Nazism, and this concerns anti-fascists in Germany itself and our allies in the Second World War,” Putin said. “In the run-up to the festive days, I would not want to speak of unpleasant things of which you said. I want to concentrate attention on memory and on the fact that the past should unite us for the sake of the future. And sport is just what unites us,” Putin said.
