Spring floods have inundated 422 homes in the Yakutia republic and about 600 people have been evacuated from them
They have been accommodated at specially prepared evacuation stations, as well as with the relatives that live in highlands. The press service of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry’s main department for Yakutia reported on Monday that the Markha settlement (in Yakutsk suburb) has been affected the worst by the floods. A total of 220 homes remain flooded there, although the water has begun to subside. Several settlements of the Churapchinsky, Tattinsky, Megino-Kangalass and Gorny districts remain in the flood zone. As many as 85 homes have been flooded in the Berdigestyakh settlement of the Gorny district by waters of the Maatta River that overflowed its banks. Emergencies ministry specialists point out that in many populated localities protected by dams the water is overflowing them. Hundreds of people with tens of heavy machinery units are engaged in efforts to restore the dams. They are using sacks with dirt for filling holes in the dams. On the Lena River, the lower edge of ice drift has come to the Yakutsk city area and the level of water in the riverbed has risen by 550 centimetres (780 cm is the critical level). Powerful ice drifts are also observed in the Aldan, Vilyui and Amga Rivers. Ice on the Yana, Indigirka, Olenek and Kolyma Rivers is still not moving.
