Health and Social Development Minister Mikhail Zurabov reported a decline in the death rate in Russia. “The death rate continued to decline in the first quarter and decreased to 9.1 percent,” Zurabov told President Vladimir Putin on Monday. “In absolute numbers it decreased by 47,500 people,” he said, adding that in the whole of 2006 the death rate declined by 138,000 people. The minister noted particularly a decline in infant mortality by 12.4 percent. “On the whole, there is a positive trend in the natural population loss. It decreased by 28.8 percent in the first quarter,” he said.
