Iraqi authorities have provided to the Russian Prosecutor-General’s Office information on abduction and murder of five Russian diplomats in Baghdad in last year’s June. The Prosecutor-General’s Office said on Tuesday “after talks with the Iraqi side and with the command of the multinational coalition forces, Russian investigators were given a possibility to trip to Iraq”. “In this year’s May investigators of the Prosecutor-General’s Office fulfilled during several weeks necessary investigating actions on the territory of the Russian embassy, examined investigation materials of Iraq’ s competent bodies and received copies of documents and video materials of interest to them. As a result, the investigation ascertained a number of new circumstances of the crime and persons who committed it. Russian law enforcement authorities have reached accords on further cooperation with Baghdad’s investigating court authorities in this criminal case,” the Prosecutor-General’s Office said. On June 3, 2006, unknown armed assailants attacked a car of the Russian embassy, taking four diplomats hostage and killing one embassy worker. A criminal case was opened in Russia. Soon after abduction, information about it was posted on one of Islamic sites along with an ultimatum of the Council of Mujahideen Shura of Iraq to the Russian government. The demands were the immediate pullout of federal troops from Chechnya and the release of all Muslims from Russia’s prisons. It became known in a few weeks that the Russian diplomats were killed. The Council of Mujahideen Shura, which is linked with Al-Qaeda, assumed responsibility for this crime.
