The ninth World Congress of Russian Press opened in the French capital Friday
The ninth World Congress of Russian Press opened in the French capital Friday with President Vladimir Putin’s message of greeting voiced by his aide Dzhokhan Pollyeva. About 250 delegates from almost 50 countries are attending the congress held by the World Association of Russian Press (WARP). According to ITAR-TASS Director General Vitaly Ignatenko, who is WARP president, the association currently unites 400 Russian-language media outlets all over the world. Addressing the congress, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Naryshkin said support and protection of Russian-speakers abroad is a governmental priority. He noted that the Russian-language press “plays a key role in the development of a dialogue between Russian and other world cultures.” Naryshkin stressed the importance to uphold international positions of the Russian language and called alarming “the process of dismantling the system of Russian-language education underway in some countries.” The federal target program “Russian Language” envisages support to Russian-language media outlets abroad, he said. Naryshkin supported WARP plans to hold its next congress in Moscow in 2008. He noted that WARP initiated nine years ago by ITAR-TASS “has become an influential international public organization with the positive effect on life of the multi-million Russian Diaspora.”
