Over 300 Russians and CIS nationals seek to leave Gaza, occupied by HAMAS militants several days ago
Over 300 Russians and CIS nationals seek to leave Gaza, occupied by HAMAS militants several days ago. Most of them are women married to Palestinians and their children, sources from the Russian Embassy to Israel told Tass on Monday. Diplomats are making every effort to see that all of them leave the enclave. “We, the Embassy to Israel and the Russian mission at the Palestinian National Authority, are working in close contact with Israeli authorities, with the Embassy of Jordan as well as with diplomats from CIS and other states that can help,” they stressed. At the present moment 141 Russian citizens and 19 citizens of Moldova, Kazakhstan and Belarus are about to leave the Gaza Strip. The Ukrainian Embassy has made up its own list of 166 people. Last year, Russian diplomats organized evacuation of about 80 people from Gaza when Israel launched there a large-scale operation “Summer Rains” in response to the kidnapping of corporal Gilad Shalit. The route is the same: transit via Israel to Jordan, after which they will board in Amman a plane of the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations. Now, all depends on how soon the Israelis will open the passenger section of the Eretz border crossing point in the north of the sector. The situation is aggravated by the fact that several hundred Palestinians have amassed there demanding their evacuation to the West Bank of Jordan. The authorities fear cram and disorder if the checkpoint is opened. The embassy said Israel had made no restrictions as to the age and gender of those who are leaving. Most likely men aged between 15 and 45 will be checked more thoroughly. “At any rate we shall be fighting for each person,” the sources stressed.
