Substantial number of higher education establishments might be closed
Russia's Minister of Education and Science Andrei Fursenko announced on Thursday that a substantial number of higher education establishments might be closed. The Federal Oversight Service of Education and Science will begin tough inspections of branches of Moscow higher schools in the regions and private institutes in autumn. The inspectors will above all analyse the tuition programmes and quality, and check the number of students against the figure listed in the school's license. Today, there are 3,000 state and private higher schools and branches. "There were 680 higher schools in the Soviet Union. The current figure is five times more. I wonder where they found so many qualified teachers if their number has not grown in the past 15 years?" Fursenko asked at a session of the board of the Russian Union of Rectors.
