Five persons injured in the Omsk nursing home fire, are in the central hospital of the town of Tara, one of them in critical condition
Five persons injured in the Omsk nursing home fire, are in the central hospital of the town of Tara, one of them in critical condition, chief doctor Valentina Malkova told Itar-Tass. Earlier reports said four people had been rushed to hospital with injuries and burns. "The man placed in an intensive therapy ward, has multiple fractures of ribs and extremities, and damaged lungs and pleura. He was given blood transfusion, and plasma infusion," Malkova said. Another patient sustained multiple fractures and damaged his lungs as he fell when trying to escape the blaze by climbing down from the third floor on a makeshift rope of bed sheets. The other patients suffered 2nd to 3rd degree buns of skin and respiratory tract, and less severe fractures. The chief doctor would not commit herself to prognoses regarding the hospitalized people, the eldest of whom is 78. "We're making all efforts to save their lives and help recuperate," she added. The fire that broke out a nursing home in the Omsk region killed ten elderly people. The fire alarm call came about 00:30, local time. Three hundred and one people were safely led out of danger by the nursing home personnel, well-drilled for emergencies. Omsk region governor Leonid Polezhayev who heads the crisis headquarters, ordered to carry out quick repairs of the damaged part of the building. Spokesman for the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry Viktor Beltsov told Tass that the fire had been caused by careless handling. "Careless handling of fire during smoking is a preliminary version," Beltsov said. On the eve of the tragedy, the victims received their retirement money, and by the time the fire broke out, many were intoxicated. All the fatalities were men between 52 and 75 years of age. Beltsov also said the late fire alarm was a contributing factor. "According to the available information, a nurse was not present on the first floor where the fire alarm control system is installed," he said. The first fire engine arrived at the scene five minutes after the fire alarm report. "When the firefighters arrived, seven rooms and a corridor were on fire," the spokesman said. But regional prosecutors opened a criminal case over arson. "It was ascertained during a preliminary inspection of the place of fire and an expert examination that the fire had started in a place with no prerequisites for fire; it was brought from the outside," first deputy Omsk region prosecutor Nikolai Savrun told Tass. Savrun did not rule out that criminal case might be opened under other articles because of the grave consequences of the accident.
