The Russian Foreign Ministry has condemned a terrorist attack in Lebanon that killed six UN peacekeepers Sunday
The Russian Foreign Ministry has condemned a terrorist attack in Lebanon that killed six UN peacekeepers Sunday. A blast in southern Lebanon killed six soldiers - three Colombians and three Spaniards - and wounded several other peacekeepers in the first attack there since last year's armed confrontation between Israel and the Hezbollah movement. No one has claimed responsibility yet, Lebanese media reported. The Lebanese leadership and the country's political forces, including Hezbollah, have also denounced the crime. "Moscow categorically denounces the provocative terrorist attack against international peacekeepers who have a UN Security Council mandate to carry out a very important mission to maintain security and peace on the border between Lebanon and Israel," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said. The diplomat described the act of terror as a challenge to the entire international community and said that Russia supported a demand to thoroughly investigate the cause of the incident and find the guilty. There are now about 13,000 UN peacekeepers deployed in the area, including French, Spanish and Indian soldiers.
