Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov was reelected for a fifth term Wednesday
Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov, 70, who has been in office for the past 15 years, was reelected for a fifth term Wednesday. Moscow legislators approved Luzhkov's candidacy nominated last Friday by Russian President Vladimir Putin with a 32-3 vote. The Moscow legislature has 35 members, including 28 pro-presidential United Russia members. The mayor is a co-chairman and one of the founders of the ruling United Russia party. Luzhkov has been repeatedly accused of corruption and is notorious for his anti-homosexual stance banning gay parades in the city, but has also overseen an economic boom in Moscow, which has a budget of 700 billion rubles ($27 billion). The mayor has published over 200 publications and books and has also patented over 50 inventions. Luzhkov is married with four children. His second wife, Yelena Baturina, is a businesswoman and Russia's only female billionaire. According to Forbes magazine, Baturina's net worth as of 2006 is more than $2.3 billion.
