Four-time biathlon Olympic Champion Alexander Tikhonov in his pre-imposition statement at a meeting of the Novosibirsk regional court on Monday refused to admit his guilt
Four-time biathlon Olympic Champion Alexander Tikhonov who is charged with plotting of an assassination attempt on governor of the Kemerovo region Aman Tuleyev, in his pre-imposition statement at a meeting of the Novosibirsk regional court on Monday refused to admit his guilt. “I has not admitted my guilt and consider myself innocent,” Tikhonov stated. “I hope the court will make a just decision.” After that Judge Oleg Yelfimov announced a recess saying that the sentence announcement will begin at 02:00 p.m., local time (11:00 a.m., Moscow time), Monday. Yelfimov said earlier that the “defendant will have the last statement and after that the court will deliver the sentence.” The public prosecutor considers the guilt of the defendant proven and he requested to sentence him to five years in a tight security prison. Tikhonov has pleaded not guilty. According to him, he has “no relation” whatsoever to the assassination attempt preparation. The Kemerovo region governor has earlier repeatedly stated he bore no grudge against Alexander Tikhonov and called upon the prosecutors to drop criminal proceedings. He also urged the court to forgive Tikhonov, if he was guilty. The criminal case against the famous bi-athlete was referred to court late last year. According to investigators, the chief of the MIKOM company, Mikhail Zhivilo, “ordered” the murder of the Kemerovo region’s governor Aman Tuleyev in 2000 because the latter had allegedly edged out Zhivilo’s company from the regional economy. The businessman asked his friend Tikhonov to arrange a contract hit. Tikhonov, in turn, asked his brother Viktor Tikhonov, who lives in Novosibirsk, to hire killers. Viktor Tikhonov found perpetrators and paid them 180,000 dollars advance, according to the investigators. However, the intended killers reported the plotted crime to the Federal Security Service (FSB). In 2002, the Novosibirsk regional court sentenced Alexander Tikhonov’s brother to four years in prison and he has already served the term. Mikhail Zhivilo has been staying abroad at the time, so he is on the federal wanted list. Tikhonov has been on recognisance since the beginning of the trial.
