The main investigation department under the main police department for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region is investigating a criminal case opened over the fact of a road accident as a result of which the daughter of Sochi mayor Viktor Kolodyazhny died, the press service of the police department told Itar-Tass on Monday. The criminal proceedings have been instituted under Article 264 part one of the Russian Criminal Code “violation of road traffic rules and operation of transport vehicles entailing grave consequences through negligence.” According to the police press service, a Lada car whose driver lost control over steering, rammed into a sightseeing carriage, in which Viktor Kolodyazhny and his family were riding. The girl fell out of the carriage at the moment of the crash and got under the car wheels. According to the press service of the Petersburg police department, “the Lada motorist did not try to flee from the place of the accident and was detained for the investigation of the road accident.” According to police, “The man was let go after questioning under recognisance not to leave because there were no reasons to believe that he would abscond from the preliminary investigation.” The necessary expert examinations are being conducted by law enforcers of St. Petersburg in order to ascertain the circumstances of the tragedy. Now all persons figuring in the case are giving testimony, including the coachee girl that steered the sightseeing carriage in which Viktor Kolodyazhny and his family were riding. Meanwhile, it is known from driving practice of Petersburg motorists that the stretch of the road on which the tragedy took place is dangerous - its peculiarity is that it has “a springboard effect” when cars drive on bridges across the city’s kanavka (channels). The speed limit here is 40 kilometres per hour due to the difficulty of the road section, according to road traffic rules. Kolodyazhny’s daughter Valeriya, 4, injured on Friday evening at 09:40 p.m., Moscow time, as a result of a road traffic accident in downtown Petersburg - near 33, the Palace Embankment, died on Saturday evening at the Mariinskaya hospital before the arrival of German medics. They were specially summoned to treat the girl. The foreign specialists stated that “Russian doctors have done their utmost, but it was impossible to save the girl.” St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko on Sunday expressed deep and sincere condolences in connection with the death of Sochi mayor’s daughter, Itar-Tass learnt from chief of the governor’s public relations service Andrei Kibitov.
