Female resident of the city of Voronezh who was transfused with HIV-infected blood has got three and half million roubles in moral compensation
A female resident of the city of Voronezh who was transfused with HIV-infected blood has got three and half million roubles in moral compensation. Her lawyer Viktor Koltsov told ITAR-TASS on Friday that compensation was ordered to a regional transfusion station. The woman was infected with human immunodeficiency virus in the spring of 2005. The young mother was transfused in a maternity house with plasma from a HIV-infected donor. In six months blood tests showed her to be HIV-positive. The regional prosecutor’s office stopped a criminal case against a chief of the transfusion station in connection with amnesty, but the young woman filed a civil suit seeking 10 million roubles in moral compensation. Court hearings were held behind closed doors. The court agreed to arguments of the lawyers that the amnesty of the transfusion station’s chief administrator did not exempt the station from paying compensation, but reduced the sum to three and a half million roubles. The transfusion station appealed to a higher court, but it confirmed the ruling of the Voronezh district court. “This is the first court decision of this kind in Russia on the fact of infecting a person with HIV-infected blood,” the lawyer said.
