The earthquake in Nevelsk left about 240 families without homes. Four of the damaged buildings cannot be repaired. People are accommodated in suburban camps with heating systems, in resort sites and other places, Russian presidential envoy to the Far East Federal District Kamil Iskhakov told reporters. Work is under way in the quake-hit area to remove debris, destroyed roofs and other constructions. Two people died and ten were injured in the quake, Iskhakov said. Injured people have been airlifted by a helicopter to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Eight lighter tremours followed the quake. There are no signs that it may be followed by another powerful quake. The first tremour measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale occurred at 13:37 Sakhalin time (06:37 Moscow time) on Thursday. The epicenter was in the Tatar Strait near Moneron Island. The second tremour measuring 6.1 was recorded at 16:22 local time (09:22 Moscow time), with the epicentre 30 kilometres from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
