A devastating earthquake in the Sakhalin town of Nevelsk on August 2 has left 2,885 people without shelter, the vice-governor of the Sakhalin region, Sergei Sheredekin, told a session of the commission for emergency situations. The population of Nevelsk is 16,745 people. A total of 710 people have been evacuated from the city as of the present moment. According to vice-governor Lyubov Shubina, one school is being repaired in the city, and a gym is to be pulled down in another school. One kindergarten is being pulled down, while others are repaired. Two sections of the central regional clinic must be examined after aftershocks. Part of the hospital equipment was damaged. Twenty-four medics and nurses have remained without shelter. The same situation is with Nevelsk teachers. Sheredekin has set the task to prepare the town for the upcoming winter season. The major earthquake occurred on August 2 in the Tatar Strait, which is the northernmost body of water in the Sea of Japan. Nevelsk is located on the coast of the strait. The quake had the magnitude of 6.8 on the open-ended Richter scale in the epicentre. In Nevelsk, shocks reached 6.0 to 7.0 points. Two people were killed in the quake. According to latest reports, 79 houses and 1,601 apartments are beyond repair.
