Already 250 buildings were recognized not subject to reconstruction in the Sakhalin city of Nevelsk
Already 250 buildings were recognized not subject to reconstruction in the Sakhalin city of Nevelsk, which was hit by a devastating earthquake on August 2. The Far Eastern emergencies center cited this new information on Friday about the aftermath of a strong earthquake. The Sakhalin committee for emergency situations decided to pull down 221 apartment blocks and 29 social and cultural facilities. Ten apartment blocks and five cultural and social facilities have been demolished so far. As many as 290 apartment blocks need repairs. Sakhalin rescuers have taken away the property of Nevelsk residents from 23 apartment blocks, which are subject to demolishment. One tent camp with 18 people is still opened in the city. As many as 838 people, including 507 children, have been evacuated from the quake-hit region since August 2. Other people, who remained homeless, were accommodated temporarily at relatives and in countryside houses. Meanwhile, 12 Nevelsk residents returned to their apartments from holiday homes. As many as 1,595 people and 145 special vehicles are involved in the cleanup operation after the devastating earthquake in Nevelsk. The earthquake, which rocked southern Sakhalin on August 2, had a magnitude of 6.8 points on the Richter scale. Tremors of 6-7 points jolted Nevelsk. Two people died, another 12 were injured, more than 7,000 remained homeless. It is necessary to build 64,000 square meters of housing in order to provide this number of people with new apartments. It is already decided that all houses, which will be built in Nevelsk, will be no higher than three-storey buildings and are designed to resist an earthquake of nine points.
