The taiga is on fire in the Russian Republic of Buryatia. A big fire is raging on the area of 800 hectares in the Baikal national park, the main emergencies department in the Republic of Buryatia told Itar-Tass. The thunderbolt triggered the fire. The flames were creeping to the treetops, therefore about 650 hectares of forests cannot be put down, the emergencies department said. Another big fire engulfed on the area of 500 hectares in the Baikal region of the republic, 25 kilometers northwest of the village of Kika. The firefighting efforts are complicated, as both fires broke out in the hard-to-reach highlands. Thirty-five people are involved in the firefighting efforts. The firefighting efforts are successful in 14 fires sweeping the area of 1,500 hectares in the republic on Friday. Six new fires on the area of 46 hectares have been spotted over the past day. Five fires on the area of 54 hectares have been extinguished. As many as 986 fires, which damaged or destroyed about 22,000 hectares of taiga, have broken out in Buryatia’s forests since early spring.
