President Putin is to meet IOC President Jacques Rogge on Thursday in the Black Sea resort of Sochi
President Putin is to meet the International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge on Thursday in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. The city in southern Russia was chosen to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games earlier this year, defeating South Korea's Pyeongchang and Austria's Salzburg for the right during an IOC meeting in Guatemala in July. The trip to Sochi, Rogge's first, will see the IOC president visit construction work currently going on in preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympics. President Putin participated in Sochi's winning presentation in Guatemala, promising that all construction projects necessary for the Games would be completed on time, as well as guaranteeing the safety of all the participants. Rogge will begin his visit to Russia with a trip to Moscow, which is in the running to be named as host city for the first-ever Youth Olympics, due to be held in 2010. Other contenders include Athens, Bangkok and Turin. Moscow holds happy memories for Rogge. It was in the Russian capital that he was elected president of the IOC, during a meeting of the committee in July, 2001.
