The murder of Novaya Gazeta’s reviewer Anna Politkovskaya has been actually solved
The murder of Novaya Gazeta’s reviewer Anna Politkovskaya has been actually solved, a leader of the investigating commission of the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office, Petros Garibyan, said in an interview to Novaya Gazeta published on Monday, “Charges have been brought against eleven persons. Ten of them have been arrested, but the list has not been closed, all the more so that charges of involvement in the murder of Politkovskaya have not been brought against all the arrested. They have enough of other sins that have brought them to prison (some are suspected of abuse of office). We shall closely work on them,” Garibyan said. “It is another matter that it remains to establish the whole chain from a mastermind to a perpetrator, and to prepare for court incontrovertible evidence of guilt,” he added. Garibyan said the arrested people included perpetrators and “those who coordinated their activity”. “It is too early to say that an organiser in the procedural sense of this word has been arrested. We have not brought a charge against a killer as yet, but we know who he is,” the investigator said. “As for masterminds, we have a curious supposition, and we shall not say anything about that, because it is very difficult to ascertain a mastermind. Any leak can do harm. Indeed, criminals think out every detail at a hired murder, and a mastermind as a rule does not directly address killers”. The investigator said two of initial six versions remained. “We have elaborated four, and we can calmly say that persons who were once suspected by us were not involved. The two remaining versions can be made – a murder related to the professional activity and a murder for political motives,” Garibyan said. “If we talk about the journalist activity of Anna Politkovskaya, we bump into politics, and if we talk about Anna’s political activity, we cannot do without the professional activity, because Anna was a journalist, who wrote on acute political themes,” Garibayan said. “We have just come to a strait way, and there should be no hurry. Let it take a long period of time, but there should be no hurry, or else the colossal amount of work that has been done will prove in vain,” he said. He assured that the investigators sought “to land on the dock” masterminds and killers of Politkovskaya. Garibyan added than new arrests were possible. The investigation has established a relation of the Politkovskaya case to the killing of Paul Hlebnikov, the chief editor of the Russian version of Forbes magazine. The persons who were once witnesses or defendants in the Hlebnikov case at getting in the sight of investigators again, Garibyan said. “The relation of these people, many of whom were at odds with law, had been ascertained, and this helped us in the case of Politkovskaya, but it is too early to talk about a relationship of these two murders,” Garibyan said.
