The alley to commemorate the victims of Stalin repressions was opened in the capital of the Atlai republic - Gorno-Altaisk on Friday. It was created in the place where a burial site of repressed and executed city residents in 1937 was accidentally found 16 years ago. A mourning ceremony was held here and the gathered people remembered the repressed observing a minute of silence and laid wreaths to the monument. The alley opening is timed to coincide with Day of Memory of Victims of Political Repressions that is marked in Russia on October 30. The organising committee for the events devoted to the 70th anniversary of Stalin repressions was set up in the republic in June. First Vice Prime Minister of the republic’s government Yuri Antaradonov headed the committee. Under the guidance of the organising committee the alley was laid out, the earlier installed monument reconstructed, street-laps installed and land improvement of the site carried out. In the run-up to Day of Memory of Victims of Political Repressions the republic on Friday will hold corresponding events. Aside from the alley opening, the workshop “Returned names and events” will be held in Gorno-Altaisk and a requiem concert entitled “This must not occur again” will be given. A documentary photo exhibition entitled “Remember everybody” was opened in the republican museum on Thursday. The republic’s schools before that held meetings with repressed people and the collection of documents, letters, photographs was also made. The local media published materials on the destinies of the innocent repression victims. The republic also published the almanac about repressed republic’s hill-men “October 30.”
